LIFTE H2 successfully delivers hydrogen refuelling station for Open Grid Europe

Berlin, Germany — April 14th, 2025 — LIFTE H2, part of px Group, a leading energy infrastructure and operations business, proudly announces the successful delivery of a cutting-edge hydrogen project at Open Grid Europe’s (OGE) site. The project encompassed the integration and delivery of a hydrogen refuelling station, complete with buffer storage, pre-compressor and two hydrogen storage tanks. This milestone highlights LIFTE H2’s technical excellence and seamless project execution, while underscoring px Group’s commitment to enabling scalable, low-carbon solutions that drive the global energy transition forward.

In 2023 LIFTE H2 was awarded to design, install and commission a bespoke hydrogen solution for the KruH2 hydrogen pilot project at Open Grid Europe`s site in Krummhörn, near Emden. The project aimed to establish robust hydrogen refuelling infrastructure for an internal fleet of hydrogen powered vehicles. LIFTE H2 has completed the high-pressure hydrogen dispenser capable of delivering hydrogen at 70 MPa (700 bar), ensuring safe and efficient refuelling for a variety of hydrogen-powered light-duty vehicles.

Key features of the hydrogen refuelling station include:

  • Dual Compressor System: A sophisticated system that progressively pressurises the hydrogen, enhancing efficiency and ensuring reliable operation.
  • Buffer Storage Tank: Capable of holding up to 300 bar of hydrogen, this tank guarantees a consistent and dependable supply.
  • Two Large Storage Tanks: These tanks provide substantial capacity for long-term hydrogen storage for vehicle refuelling, as well as hydrogen supply for future applications such as tests with CHP (combined heat and power) or fuel cell applications.

The hydrogen is produced on-site using a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyser powered by renewable energy from nearby wind farms. The site is located in an area with significant grid congestion, meaning the electrolyser can utilise wind power that previously could not be transported away.   This process ensures zero carbon emissions during production, reinforcing our commitment to creating sustainable energy systems and a greener future.

“We are delighted to deliver this hydrogen installation to our customer,” said Paul Karzel, founder and Managing Director of LIFTE H2 GmbH. “The facility not only advances the infrastructure for hydrogen but also demonstrates LIFTE H2’s commitment to renewable energy and the environment. It allows a major infrastructure player like OGE to gain more and more experience with hydrogen as an energy carrier.”

Tom Elliger, Head of Engineering of LIFTE H2 GmbH, highlights the challenges of developing an energy-efficient and high-performance facility. “Our main goal was to design a station tailored to OGE’s unique requirements while optimising available funding. By prioritising efficiency and scalability, we ensured the solution is both practical and advanced without unnecessary over-dimensioning.”

This project marks another milestone in LIFTE H2’s contributions to the energy transition and the global hydrogen economy.

Geoff Holmes, CEO of px Group, said: “The successful integration and delivery of the hydrogen refuelling station in Germany is a major step forward in px Group’s energy transition journey. Through LIFTE H2, we are extending our presence beyond our established markets in the UK, Norway, and the US, and actively shaping the future of clean energy across Europe. This milestone underscores our ambition to be a driving force in hydrogen infrastructure and a trusted partner in key strategic regions.”
